The National Smokejumper Center is in the midst of an exciting transition.  In the Fall of 2011, we have begun moving the historic Madison ranger station to a new home at the entrance of Yellowstone National Park and we're growing into the  West Yellowstone Outdoor Education Center.

The West Yellowstone Outdoor Education Center is dedicated to inspiring American youth and their parents to reconnect to the outdoors.

Hosted by our non-profit 501c(3) corporation, this Center is housed in the historic madison Ranger Station in West Yellowstone, Montana, at the entrance to Yellowstone National Park.  The role of fire in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem serves as the focal point of our efforts.
While the Center creates a unique educational experience for visitors of all ages, we specifically focus on youth programs.  Programs like the Junior Smokejumper give participants an appreciation of forests and the role of fire in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
We are currently involved in an ambitious partnership with the Town of West Yellowstone to move the historic Madison Ranger Station to land situated just a few feet from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park where over three million people enter the Park in any given year.  The Gallatin National Forest recently decided to sell the property where the historic ranger station is located. They have agreed to move the buildings and donate them to the Town of West Yellowstone which plans to make the buildings available to NSC to continue its educational programs.   The historic buildings are in excellent condition; check the Photo Gallery for some early photos of these buildings to contrast them with how they look today and to watch the progress as we move and settle them in their new location.
We must continue to secure additional funding as we have prepared the site and must now move the structures this fall.   We need to raise $150,000 to accomplish this.  If you'd like to help save this historic ranger station which furthers our work with kids, please make a tax-deductible donation.  Use the link on our "Getting Involved" page to make a secure online donation.
